Horse and Buddy Therapeutic Riding

Horse and Buddy Therapeutic Riding

When I first moved to NC over 20 years ago, I volunteered at a fairly new therapeutic riding program, Horse and Buddy. They ran the program out of a boarding barn. They had one or two horses and a handful of riders. Because boarders came first, the situation at that barn was not always ideal for riders with limitations.  After one of the lessons, Janet Mason the founder and executive director said to me, "I really wish we could have our own facility someday, but I don't see how that would ever happen." Shortly after that conversation a benefactor came forward and offered to lease land in New Hill, NC where they could build a facility.

They built their own facility with a barn, covered arena, sensory trails and acres of pasture. Several years ago they purchased the land. They now serve a hundred riders a week. They have 8 horses, two miniature horses, a small paid staff and loads of volunteers. They have added a Silver Saddles program for seniors from assisted living facilities and an equine assisted therapy program.

This past weekend  I had the privilege of spending time at Horse and Buddy Annual Horse Show signing copies of Posey's Problem. We donated copies of Posey's Problem. They sold them at the horse show and 100% of the proceeds went to Horse and Buddy. I loved seeing the smiles on the riders and the proud parents. I knew a handful of the riders from when I was there as a volunteer. It was my joy to see how Horse and Buddy has grown and continued to thrive over the years.
